Mario Kart Tour (Japanese: マリオカート ツア ー Mario Kāto Tsuā), sometimes shortened to MKT, was officially released on September 25, 2019(1)Mario Kart Tour Wikipedia article | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Kart_Tour on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store(2)Takashi Mochizuki (February 7, 2018). ‘DeNA CEO said “Mario Kart Tour,” a Nintendo-DeNA smartphone game planned for FY18, will be free-to-start.’ Twitter.. It is Nintendo’s first Mario Kart game of the series to be released on mobile phones. MKT takes the quirky racing mechanics of other games in the series and has optimized the experience for smartphones. Nintendo first revealed the game during a financial briefing on January 31, 2018(3)Nine Months Financial Results Briefing for Fiscal Year Ending March 2018 (2018) Nintendo.. This is the third Mario game released by Nintendo for mobile devices, with the previous titles being Super Mario Run and Dr. Mario World. Mario Kart World is the 9th main game of the Mario Kart series, and it is the 14th game overall. The Mario Kart Tour icon for iOS and Android Unlike Super Mario Run, MKT focuses primarily on its free-to-play mobile micro-transaction mechanic to generate revenue. The game incorporates this through having items locked until players obtain enough in game currency to recieve them through the game’s warp pipe. Many assets from Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 are reused in the mobile game, with the gliding mechanic and special abilities from items making an appearance as well. Not all is copied over from previous entries in the series though, as players can now race through tracks in reverse and can use a much larger amount of items during a race with the Frenzy Mode. On April 23, 2019, Nintendo allowed select Android users to sign up for a closed beta of the game. Players that were allowed to enter this closed beta program needed to be located in either North America or Japan. This beta ran from May 22, 2019 through June 4, 2019(4)Romano, Sal (April 24, 2019). Mario Kart Tour Android closed beta test set for May 22 to June 4. Gematsu.. On September 25, 2019, the game officially was released onto the app stores in 163 different locations. Belgium and Vietnam were left out of this release due to their banning of games containing loot boxes in 2019. If you were a player who registered for the game ahead of time, you were able to download the game a day ahead of others. Nintendo came forward with news that multiplayer would be put into the mobile game on March 8, 2020(5)@mariokarttourEN (March 2, 2020). Multiplayer mode announcement. Twitter.. Getting Started Mario Kart Tour requires a Nintendo Account in order to play. You can easily setup a Nintendo account for free both in the game or on the official Nintendo website here. Gameplay The ultimate goal all Kart games is to be in the first place position at the end of each race. Players will inevitably use various items that they obtain from driving through item boxes labeled with a question mark. A Mario Kart item box Because this game is on mobile devices, the player will hold the phone in portrait mode instead of landscape. Players will guide their cart and use items using touch controls, for example a player may maneuver their vehicle by dragging their finger across the screen. Turning a player’s vehicle may be done in one of three different ways. The choice ultimately will depend on the player’s play style and situation in the race. Gyroscope controls are available for mobile phones that support this feature; allowing a player to move their phone in real time and have the kart react. There is a small circular button at the bottom of the screen which players need to first tap and then sometimes slide their finger upwards. Mario Kart Tour gameplay The default setting is for the user to tap the screen to jump and drift their kart by dragging their fingers in a direction. Players may also prefer the other optional configuration, where tapping on the screen does not make them jump and steering is done by dragging one’s fingers across the screen. Under this second optional configuration, after a player has been manually steering their kart for some time, the game begins to then drift for them automatically and charges “mini turbos” and “super mini turbos”. Important to note, “ultra mini turbos” are still only charged while drifting. Mario Kart Tour has the same auto-acceleration and smart steering features as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with the ability for karts to accelerate on their own and automatically steer players away from and avoid the edges of the track. How high a player wants this smart steering mode to be is adjustable in the game’s settings. This game’s mechanics are heavily influenced by those in Mario Kart 7, with most of the retro courses available to play as normal and retro courses in the game. Do keep in mind that some key features from Mario Kart 8 that were more complex to the game, such as ATVs, motorcycles and bikes, customizing a vehicle’s tires, anti-gravity, and twelve player races are missing from this mobile game entirely. The 200cc class is present in this game though. Upon finishing a race, players receive “Grand Stars” and experience points (for the character that they chose for the race), kart and glider points (if the vehicle and glider are not already maxed out), and coins. If the player finishes in one of the top three spots in the race, their gauge level is filled up. If the player doesn’t do so well in the race and places in the fifth place or lower, their gauge level is subsequently lowered. For players whose gauge levels are already completely on empty, they cannot go negative. Only experience points from each course can be lost and every course has an ultimate experience point maximum. Experience points are lessened for players that continually place in the top three for races until the experience point maximum has been reached. Once this happens, only experience points that were removed for coming in fifth place or below will be added to the total. A player’s total experience does not reset and gets carried over to the following subsequent tours. This encourages players to continue racing in new levels to gain experience and increase their level. Players may receive “Grand Stars” depending on the amount of points that they receive during races. Coins are received for the total number of coins a player picks up while racing a course, gaining one additional coin for every additional 1,000 points they achieved. Players may earn a maximum of up to 450 XP for the drivers they pick, their karts, gliders, and may receive 300 coins from races. Once a player has reached one of these aforementioned limits, they may not gain additional experience or coins from races and must wait until the following day to start again. Point boost tickets allow players to keep gaining XP and coins. Players may also enter coin rush or receive rewards. Remember that filling up your gauge to level up your racer will grant you a reward and increase the points earned for your placement in a race. When a player reaches level 7 or 12, players are then able to buy additional items from the game’s virtual shop. At this time, the highest level that a player may reach is level 150. Standard Challenges, on the other hand, earn players rubies (the main in game currency that will be spent). The Gold Pass grants players access to the 200cc engine class, extra items from Tour Gifts, and Gold Challenges. Do keep in mind that the 200cc is only available for members with an active subscription to the Gold Pass, which requires actual money (not in game currency). Certain courses are more favorable to certain drivers, with it being advantageous to use that specific character while racing. Courses all have three separate tiers for each individual driver, kart, and glider respectively. Drivers in the third tier are given one item for every item box they get, drivers in the second tier are given two items, and drivers in the first tier can expect to be given three items for each item box they run into. When it comes to karts, karts that are second tier give a bonus multiplier of 1.5x with first tier karts giving a multiplier of 2x. Second tier gliders give an increase in time of two point gaining actions to count as a combo and give a bonus multiplier of 2x. First tier gliders will increase the combo time even more and give players a combo bonus multiplier of 3x. Players have the ability to enter a “Frenzy” mode if they acquire three of the same item at the same time (each item slot is an identical item). Once in a “Frenzy”, they are granted invincibility and are able to use that item an infinite amount of times until they return back to normal. High end and super drivers, karts and gliders when playing them with their preferred courses. Drivers also have their own special items unique to them, reminiscent of the mechanic in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!‘s. Individual karts also have their own unique bonuses. Some karts increase the drifting ability and some gliders give the player a better chance of receiving specific items from item blocks. All drivers, karts and gliders are leveled up by continuing to play and upgrades are received as this occurs. Individual tours house specific courses, so depending on the tour that a player selects (tours change on a biweekly basis) determines which courses they will play. Beginning with the Baby Rosalina Tour, all tours have 12 cups each, adding new additional drivers, karts, gliders, and even tracks. Tours that feature real world locations are typically the ones players can expect to race courses designed specifically for Mario Kart Tour. All cups each have three races and one additional bonus challenge to complete. In bonus challenges, the player has to work to beat a goal laid out for a specific racer, kart, and glider. Once a player has earned a Grand Star for completing all of the three races and the extra bonus challenge, they may then move on. Tour Gifts are given to players between cups if players have earned a high enough amount of Grand Stars. Ranked cups appear weekly, with one of the tour’s cups becoming one. Ranked cups put users on a leaderboard, ranking them compared to 19 other players in the same ranked cup. Players who place in the top ten get a reward and also get a tier increase at the closing of the week if their position is towards the top. For players who finish above tier 20, a couple of tiers will be removed. Anything tier 24 and upward rewards players who place towards the top with “points cap” tickets. “Points cap” tickets and “point boost” tickets do not stay the same, but instead fluctuate by driver, kart, and glider tickets every single week. What are Points? In Mario Kart Tour, points are given to players as they place in standard races. The amount of points a player earns is used towards collecting a “Grand Star”. Points also help players rank in their overall standing and against other players in ranked cups. Points are gotten while racing, position points, and base points. Base Points Players earn base points once a race inititally starts. These base points are the total of the base points of the character, the kart, and the glider currently in use. Base points very from 800 up to 2800. They may increased by experience points players receive once they finish a race or also through “point boost” tickets. Experience points increase a player’s gauge and once this gauge is completely full, will increase the total base points until the maximum value has been reached. Experience points necessary to fill up a gauge will increase every time the gauge is fully filled. “Points cap” tickets have also been added to MKT, allowing players to increase the maximum base points for drivers, karts, and gliders. For example, in the event of a “jump boost”, gliding for x amount of time, completing a lap at a certain place in the race, knocking opponents, etc. In instances where an additional event occurs within 2 seconds from the previous event, the combo indicator and points given are increased. Players may select specific higher level gliders/level up their gliders to increase the amount of time that may pass between events. To following formula explains how the number of points are calculated: Points = (base points from event × kart tier multiplier of course × kart rarity multiplier & skill level) + combo bonus + bonus point boosts + kart’s special skill increase + glider’s special skill increase The following formula explain how a combo bonus is calculated: Combo bonus = glider’s tier multiplier of the course × min[combo count – 1; (engine class cc) / 10] Note: Keep in mind that while calculating a combo bonus, 150cc and 200cc are interchangeable. The following formula explains how a bonus point boost is calculated: Bonus point boost = base points × (skill level – 1) × [(engine class cc) / 30000] Note: Also keep in mind while calculating bonus point boosts that 150cc and 200cc are interchangeable. When more than 200 events occur, a bonus point boost is not given after exceeding the 200th event. Position points Players are given position points at the end of each race depending on their final place. The following formula explains how position points are calculated: Position points = [(level of player position points + engine class bonus) × position multiplier] + position bonus point boosts The following formula explains how a position bonus point boost is calculated for the driver, kart, and glider used from the first tier: Position bonus point boost = base points × (skill level – 1) × number of events from race × position multiplier × [(engine class cc) / 30000] Note: While calculating position bonus point boost, 150cc and 200cc are once again interchangeable. Grand Stars are the number one collectible in individual tours. A maximum of five grand stars can be achieved is a player reaches points thresholds in each standard race. Up to five stars can be granted by achieving certain goals for each bonus challenge. Clearing all daily challenges gets an additional Grand Star as well as beating Tour Challenges and Gold Challenges. Players may also exchange star tickets for Grand Stars. Grand Stars grant players access to items (usually cups and gifts) when selecting courses. Once a player has gotten every single available gift, they will then begin to earn coins and Grand Stars that are granted through new tours are set to 0. Rubies Mario Kart Tour rubies. Rubies are the in-game currency that Mario Kart Tour uses. Rubies may be purchased with actual currency (not in game consumables), but can also be granted from logging into the game on a daily basis, bonuses from leveling up characters, from ranked cups, standard challenges, and from tour gifts. Players use rubies to enable coin rush mode as well as launch pipes. Coins Mario Kart Tour coin. Players collect coins while racing and are also given coins based on the number of points achieved during their races. They may receive a maximum of 300 per day. For one race, you may calculate the number of coins earned with the following formula: Coins earned = total coins collected during race + floor[(total number of points earned during race)/1000] The maximum number of coins that you can achieve during a race is 99, but it is unclear what the maximum number of coins that can be achieved from points is. Other than the previously mentioned ways of achieving coins, there is also a special mode called “Coin Rush”, as well as other ways such as Gold Challenges, Tour Challenges, Standard Challenges, logging in on a regular daily basis, leveling up characters, are given as rewards for a player’s place in cups, and friend ranks. Players may spend rubies to enter “Coin Rush” mode, where they can easily pick up a large amount of coins. Each course contains over 300 total coins. All tours contain a “Coin Rush” mode course. The normal driver for “Coin Rush” mode is Gold Mario, with the Gold Standard being the normal kart used. Coins that a player gets from “Coin Rush” mode are multiplied by a specific number, as shown below: Coins multiplierRubies256151025The special Coins Aplenty Event was debuted in MKT during the Cooking Tour. During this event, players have one full day to achieve as many coins as they can from certain cups, which changes depending on the player. 300 coins are given to players upon completing their first race for each course of a cup while playing the event. There is a total of 900 maximum coins guaranteed to be earned from the event itself (This amount of 900 coins does not count towards the total daily maximum players usually have of 300 coins from racing). The daily maximum coin value does not apply for these races, granting players the ability to earn coins well past the maximum for that day if already reached. Players will frequently spend their coins in the Daily Selects area of the game’s shop. Game Menus Banners From the top menu area section, players have the ability to purchase “Special offers” and can also create a subscription to the game’s “Gold Pass” membership. “Special offers” will change from time to time and will vary depending on when a user visits this section. With “Gold Pass”, players are granted access to 200cc races. Shop The game’s shop area is comprises of 3 main sections. Pipes Pipes are the main mechanism in the game by which players can exchange in game currency for new drivers, karts, and gliders. All of these vary by rarity and it is by chance that a player achieve a favorable outcome. Pipes contain certain levels of “Normal”, “Super”, and “High End” unlockables. Because items have no particular order in how they are achieved from pipes, they may be granted in any order. It is important to note that players may receive items from pipes that they already own, but the level gauge of the duplicate will increase by one unit. Pipes can be reset at any time. Ever since the Halloween tour, new pipes have been introduced in-game each week. Pipes will usually have these items, with current “spotlight items” replacing the “Super” or “High end” items: Items from standard new 100 item pipeItemNormalSuperHigh EndCharacterKartGliderCharacterKartGliderCharacterKartGliderAmount322616974222Up until the New Year’s Tour, pipes usually would have these items: Items from new pipeItemNormalSuperHigh EndFeaturedHigh EndCharacterKartGliderCharacterKartGliderCharacterKartGliderCharacterKartGliderAmount322616974111111It is fairly common for some pipes to have 50 items in them. Daily Selects Mario Kart Tour Daily Selects menu. “Daily Selects” are reset for players every single day. The “Daily Selects” is comprised of four different sections with the first three results being 3 items. The last section in this area is the “Coin Rush” The first section is available to anyone and only has Normal items along with point boost tickets. The second section is accessible only to players that are at least level 7. This second section has Normal items along with Super items (with items tickets and quick tickets). The third section is accessible to players that are at least level 12 and contains Super and High End items. Once an item’s skill level has completely reached its maximum level, this item is then swapped with a level boost ticket (it will be just as rate and be worth the same price value). If an item’s skill level reaches its maximum level for the first time, level boost tickets of various different types and rareness are accessible (these will have a similar price as the item as well as rareness level). There are four different types of challenges which consist of Standard Challenges, Multiplayer Challenges, Tour Challenges, and Gold Challenges. Standard Challenges are challenges that last for a longer period of time, which players will slowly chip away at over the course of the entire game. Multiplayer Challenges made an appearance in the Baby Rosalina Tour and are special challenges created specifically for multiplayer mode. Tour Challenges are shorter and only last for as long as the tour is being played. Gold Challenges are only accessible and playable with a Gold Pass subscription. Expert Challenges were added in the Cooking Tour. These Expert Challenges are significantly harder than the previously mentioned Tour, Gold, and Standard Challenges and they last for 12 weeks. Players are given rubies for completing Standard and Multiplayer Challenges, with Tour and Gold Challenges giving players extra Grand Stars. Expert Challenges on the other hand do not give players any rewards upon completion. All challenge cards have nine challenges in them and they are arranged in a grid-like structure. Every time a player achieves a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal 3 in a row match, they are given a coin reward. Players are also given rewards when they complete an entire challenge card 100%. Friends Mario Kart Tour has the option for players to become friends with other players in the game. Once two players are friends, the both can see one another’s points on all of the different cups. After the launch of the Baby Rosalina Tour, players are given rewards if the week’s ranked cup total points exceed certain amounts. There is one instance where players received rubies instead of coins, but that was only during the Flower Tour. Bug updates and issues are also reported here, along with patches and fix releases. Multiplayer On March 8, 2020, multiplayer was added to MKT. Players can race and compete against 8 other players online at the same time.(8)@mariokarttourEN (March 2, 2020). Multiplayer mode announcement. Twitter. MKT has three multiplayer modes, these consist of: playing with friends or other players nearby a player’s current location, Standard Races, a worldwide mode where players compete with other players around the globe, and a mode available only to those with an active Gold Pass subscription, Gold Races, where players play against other Gold Pass members. Mario Kart Tour’s multiplayer grading system. In multiplayer mode, players race against others in cup tours, with the cup swapping ever 15 minutes. While playing the “With Friends or Others Nearby” option, custom rules can be set for the races. These optional rules are engine class (50cc, 100cc or 150cc), item slots (1, 2 or 3), teams (0, 2, 3 or 4), and whether or not computer players will race as well. Players can create and invite friends to custom Rooms that they have made with invite codes that are generated. Standard Races have to different sets of rules that change on a daily basis: 100cc where players have the default item slots and 100cc where players have two item slots. With Gold Races, there are four rules that change on a daily basis: 150cc where players have the default item slots, 150cc where players have two item slots, 200cc where players have default item slots, and 200cc where players have one item slot. Standard Races also may have the team game option show up. In both of these modes, a grading system for players runs while playing which will grade players at the end based on their performance in each race. Players are graded on a scale from F – A, although in Gold Races the grading system is S, then S+1 to S+6. When playing multiplayer mode, players will often be waiting for other players to join. During this waiting period, players will earn coins. Each day, players can earn a maximum of 100 coins while waiting in multiplayer mode. Badges The Mario Kart Tour Badge menu screen. While playing MKT, players earn badges during and after races by completing certain challenges. A specific badge that has been earned can be chosen to display next to their username as a way to show their progress in the game. These username badges are shown in the game when scores are shown, before races, in game ranks, and in a player’s friends list. Do keep in mind that budges are not given if a challenge is finished before the challenge card is unlocked. Badges can sometimes be earned out of the game’s Gift Boxes. Gold badges are only available to players with an active Gold Pass subscription. These gifts can be coins, badges, and even rubies. Gifts are more likely to occur during special occasions such as celebration days, during the beginning of new tours, and also happened once the game first introduced its Multiplayer mode. Once received by a player, gifts remain available for them to collect for up to 14 days maximum. Skill level points The total skill level points required to advance a acquired driver, kart or glider to specific skill levels are listed in the table below. Increasing the skill level of a driver, kart or glider cannot be done without obtaining duplicates of them as Tour Gift from the game’s pipe mechanic or the in-game shop. Level-boost tickets can also be used for this, granted they match the same type and rarity. The terms ‘courses”, “tracks”, and “levels” may be used interchangeably, all to describe the same thing. In Mario Kart Tour, regular versions of courses may all be played in Reverse mode “R” and also can include a Trick mode “T”. As you probably have figured out, “R” stands for Reverse, in which courses are played backwards with some slight variations to the normal mode. Additionally, courses with a “T” are in Trick mode, where many extra jumps and courses appear for a player to do tricks on. Courses may have both “R” and “T” attributes at the same time, otherwise known as “R/T”. The one final variant to regular tracks would be the “RMX” versions. “RMX” stands for Remix and features new layouts and spins on traditional levels, often having extra jumps and obstacles to traverse. It is by far the Mario Kart game with the most playable characters to date. When the game first launches, the playable characters available are Toadette, Peachette, and Toad. Once a player gets through the initial tutorial section of the game, they are given a chance to launch the pipe and out will come a random Super Class character: either Bowser, Metal Mario, Dry Bowser, or Peach. In MKT, racers are filtered by their rarity in the game related to their unlockability. The ranks of character rarity are as follow: Normal, Super, and High End. Normal rarity characters are the easiest to achieve, with rarer characters being under the Super and High End categories of rarity. Any individual item can become a Frenzy mode item, so long as a player has 3 of it at any given time (the only item that does not activate frenzy mode is the star). The chance of obtaining a Frenzy mode varies based on a player’s current place in the race, the current lap number, and which character is being played. In multiplayer mode, Stars can be received from item boxes.Lakitu does not appear at the beginning of each race during the countdown phase. In this mobile game, there are no character animations when getting lower than 5th place.Game Reception The game released to very mixed opinions from video game journalists to fans of the Mario Kart series as a whole. Numerous publications gave great response to the game’s graphics, but were quick to point out the gaem’s “free to play” mechanics and numerous micro-transactions. It was difficult for many to stomach the transition from the classic Mario Kart formula to that of a game designed to push in app purchases. Sam Machkovech of Ars Technica was quoted as stating “the developers pick a side: attach an annoying economy to a deeper control scheme and more legitimate online options, or make it cheaper and less obnoxious to watch Mario drive himself.”(9)Machkovech, Sam (May 22, 2019). Mario Kart Tour beta hands-on: Microtransactions land like a nasty blue shell. Andrew Webster of The Verge said “The sad state of Mario Kart Tour is part of a steady decline in Nintendo’s mobile efforts. Things started off promising, with an iPhone version of Super Mario designed by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto, one that was sold in its entirety for $10. After that proved to be a failure, Nintendo pivoted to free-to-play with Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. They were fun, Nintendo-quality games with mechanics like loot boxes tacked on — and they made a lot of money. Things have since taken a turn for the dire. In addition to Mario Kart Tour, earlier this year Nintendo launched a puzzle game that was essentially Dr. Mario-themed Candy Crush, and both games are aggressively monetized to the point that the actual game feels secondary.”(10)Webster, Andrew (Sep 26, 2019). Mario Kart Tour is too cynical to be fun. Webster went on to give praise to the game, noting how intuitive using items can be, while then going on to criticize the game’s controls. He called them imprecise and spoke more on the game’s monetization, “The problem is so much of the game feels designed around monetization, as opposed to just being a fun game.”(11)Webster, Andrew (Sep 26, 2019). Mario Kart Tour is too cynical to be fun. Michael McWhertor of Polygon said himself “Nintendo’s Mario Kart Tour feels off, just like every Nintendo mobile game” (12)McWhertor, Michael (Sep 27, 2019). Mario Kart Tour review: Mario Kart just doesn’t feel right on a phone. Chris Scullion at Nintendo Life left MKT an overall positive review, lifting up the lack of an energy system, praising the points system, many of the game’s cups, bu then went on to bash the time required to get used to the game’s gyro controls. He stated that the game’s monetization model was a negative overall, “It’s rubbish to an extent, absolutely, but despite the outrage you may be seeing in some circles, it’s no different to any other game with a loot box system; it’s always nearly impossible to guarantee you’ll get the exact thing you want”. Chris also spoke about the game’s gacha system and the recurring subscription model, Gold Pass, “More than the gacha system, the Gol
