I watched one of my brothers play it.

They did farming...and stuff with turnips.

And gardening.

And searching for stuff to sell.

And paying off a house loan.

I've never been able to get into it, job sims don't interest me much 😛

It looks more like the kind of game for you to just casually spend time on, hop on if you have some time to kill to just mess around with.
There are some scheduled events, like with K.K. Slider, and some games you can do, but otherwise, you're mostly just farming, buying, and selling. And trying to figure out which villagers are worth keeping in your town or not.
If that interests people, then hey, good! But I have enough troubles in reality to worry about paying off a debt to a tanooki 😛
