you need gough's help to ground him, and you can't reach gough until you defeat artorias, soooo...
I mean, fair enough, though you still have to face Kalameet first before Gough will ground him.
So the fog wall could very well be active before Artorias is dead.
nah, the fog wall only appears after he's grounded. his aerial raid comes as a spook.

@Zaruian That's not true. Gough won't even ground him until you've entered the fog wall once and seen the air raid.
there's literally no fog wall before he's grounded. one appears once he is.
(and usually died to it.)
unless that changes in NG+, but it sure wasn't like this in NG.
kinda like how first encounter with seath doesn't have a fog wall.
I mean, I've played it and seen it, it's not like I'm talking out of my ass.

same, played DLC less than two weeks ago. Heck, I remember reading in the wiki that you "can get invaded again" once he's grounded as that causes a new boss fog wall to spawn.
I clearly remember being surprised at hte fog gate when I went to fight him post grounding because there wasn't any when I first went down there. the air raid was a total surprise.
though to be fair, apparently it's possible to damage him at that stage, just pretty much impossible to actually kill him.
