I'm just doing A-rank games and getting paired with people who afk at the start or thinks splatzones is a mode where you hang back chucking a bomb here and there

I mean logically speaking, closed sets can only help the balance and variety of player usage

yes, but closed sets are meant for an environment where all the weapons and specials remains unchanged

if you add, for example, a new special weapon after all the weapons were released, some of the old weapons won't ever get that special

if you leave the sets open, the game will balance by itself. because yeah, there will be very powerful combos, but there will be a lot of ways to counter those combos, since you can get any weapon with any other set. So there will be space for variety and for originality
